⋆ Movie Review ⋆ : 커터 (Cutter) / Eclipse (2016)

*SOME SPOILERS AGAIN* Eclipse (커터) is an teen crime drama movie. Yoon-Jae (윤재) transfers to a new high school where he starts hanging out with Se-Joon (세준). Yoon-Jae needs money to pay the hospital bills for his mother and accepts a job offer by Se-Joon, although he does not know what kind of job it is.

It is an 18+ movie as it involves violence and sex crimes among other things. It is quite a dark movie. The director said that she wanted to raise public awareness of South Korea’s sex crimes through the movie. Yoon-Jae gets involved with the sex crimes through his new job. In the beginning his role is quite innocent, but he starts getting more involved till the point he delivers an unconscious drugged girl to a ‘customer’ for paid sex. I think it’s a great idea to raise awareness on sex crimes through the movie, although for me this wasn’t the main topic of the movie.

For me, the main topic of the movie was the unhealthy relationship between Yoon-Jae and Se-Joon. Se-Joon seems to be obsessed with Yoon-Jae. He tries to get Yoon-Jae for himself in various manipulating ways. He wants Yoon-Jae to need him. Yoon-Jae gets bullied and being hit by others but Se-Joon will always show up as the ‘hero’ who saves him, although he caused the trouble why Yoon-Jae got hit in the first place. He gets frustrated whenever he doesn’t get his attention or has to share him with someone else, especially with Eun-Young (은영) because he thinks Yoon-Jae likes her. And in the end the jealousy will hit the point where there is no turning back.

Some parts of the movie are open to be interpreted by the audience. This is because the actors express a lot through their eyes instead of speaking their mind. I found that a lot of the (foreign) viewers thought that there was more than a friendship between Yoon-Jae and Se-Joon. I can see this since Se-Joon was so obsessed over Yoon-Jae and Yoon-Jae denies that he likes Eun-Young. I’m not convinced that this is the case as I could not find anything where the director mentioned this.

The movie left me with some questions at the end. Yoon-Jae felt guilty about his actions and was determined to turn himself in. Yet, at the end you can see him transfer to another new high school. Did he never turn himself in? And why?

It was a very interesting movie to watch and I would recommend it!
