⋆ Movie Review ⋆ : 그것만이 내 세상 / Keys to the Heart (2018)

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

The first thing that caught my eye was the Korean title of the movie. It’s also the title of a song by Deulgukhwa (들국화), which was covered by JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong (김재중, former member of DBSK/ 동방신기) among many others. I’ve always felt a connection to the song because I used to listen a lot to his cover. You can listen to this cover at the end of this post. The original songs appears in the movie itself.

The description of the movie reminded me of the movie ‘Rain Man’ (1988): One brother is a gifted pianist with savant syndrome (Park Jungmin/ 박정민) and the other is an ex-boxer full of pride (Lee Byunghun/ 이병헌). The two reunite and learn what it’s like to be a family. However an important character seems to be missing in this description and on the promotional poster of the movie. It’s the character portrayed by Yoon Yujung (윤여정) who plays the mother. As you watch the movie you will see the movie is much more about the bond between mother and son, than the bond between the brothers. Because of the shift in focus, the movie did not remind me of ‘Rain Man’ as much as I thought it would.

The genre of the movie is comedy-drama. The contrast between the comedy part and the drama part is not too big. There are some funny moments in the beginning of the movie, but not much later flashbacks of the abusive father are showed and the ‘drama’ tone is set.

What I liked about the movie are the non-perfect characters, especially the mother. Her character makes human-like mistakes, small and big ones. She does not make excuses for leaving her son behind, instead she calls herself a selfish person.

The son can not forgive her actions. This makes it even more emotional when he starts crying, knowing his mother will pass away soon. It shows how strong the mother-son bond is and that deep down he still loves his mother.

The ending was kind of predictable, but that’s often the case with family comedy-drama’s. Nonetheless, I think the cast did a great job portraying the characters. If you like movies of this genre, I would recommend it.
